Introducing Ms. Florida 2009: Dr. Juli Goldstein.
Dr. Juli Goldstein plays an active role in her community and is as member of Indian River County Junior League, the Rotary Club, and the Sun-Runners Club of Vero Beach, where she trained to compete in the 2009 Boston Marathon. Professionally, Juli is involved in the field of marine mammal medicine, education, and research. In order to promote the importance of marine conservation, ~Dr. Juli~ lectures nationally and internationally on issues concerning both human and animal health. Her goal is to increase public awareness and encourage the public to embrace the concept of ~Going Blue~.
In 2003, Dr. Goldstein received her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine, while working to complete extensive training courses and veterinary externships that focused on the husbandry, care, assessment, and medical treatment of marine mammals.
Presently, Dr. Goldstein serves as the Staff Veterinarian and Medical Manager for the renowned Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institutes Marine Mammal Research and Conservation Program. In this capacity, she provides specialized veterinary care to sick and injured marine mammals, conducts a NOAA funded project to investigate heart disease in whales, and helps manage live dolphin health and risk assessments being conducted in the Indian River Lagoon, FL. Her research findings have been published in several peer-reviewed journal publications and help to guide and evaluate environmental management strategies.
~Dr. Juli~ is also a respected faculty member of Florida Atlantic University (FAU) www.fau.edu. In the role of Research Professor, she serves as a mentor to aspiring veterinarians and those wishing to become involved in the field of marine conservation medicine. At the same time, Juli is a member FAUs Institutional Animal Care Use Committee and further, is the veterinarian of record for the Smithsonian Marine Station located in Fort Pierce Florida. http://www.sms.si.edu/SMEE/smeehome.htm
In order to raise awareness about the importance of marine conservation and education for Floridas coastlines and irreplaceable natural resources, Juli also helps promote the mission and programs associated with the State of Floridas ~Protect Wild Dolphins~ and ~Protect Florida Whales~ specialty license plate programs http://www.fau.edu/hboi/ . Most recently, Juli formed a partnership with legendary marine life artist and fellow scientist Dr. Guy Harvey and now represents the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation http://www.guyharveyoceanfoundation.org/ whose mission is to fund inspired scientific research and innovative educational programs to encourage conservation and best management practices for sustainable marine environments.
Juli s the proud ~parent~ of two rescue golden retrievers and an abandoned parakeet named Sprite.
